From an 1984 Charter to a Worldwide Digital Campus: How Oxfordium University Reads Its Own History

Oxfordium University was founded in 1984 with a plain purpose: to teach people who could not otherwise reach a university. For most of the twentieth century that meant evening classes, extramural lecturers travelling to towns without a college, and correspondence courses posted across the country. The method changed; the purpose did not.

The Registrar has published a short history note for applicants because the past is being misread. "People assume a historic British university must mean gowns, gates and a fee that keeps most of the world out," the note says. "Our founders would not recognise that reading. They built Oxfordium to remove barriers, not to curate them."

The digital campus is the current form of the same commitment. Every taught programme is delivered online and assessed to the standard of any award of Oxfordium University. Online tuition is zero. Optional on-campus study in Oxford sits alongside the online pathways for students who want it and can afford to travel, but it is never a condition of admission, progression or graduation.

The history note is honest about what did not age well. Oxfordium, like most institutions of its era, was slow to admit women, slow to recognise qualifications earned abroad, and slow to treat part-time students as full members of the university. Each of those failures was corrected late. The lesson the university draws is that access has to be designed deliberately in every decade, because the default drifts toward exclusion.

Governance still sits under a court and a senate, external examiners still sign off assessments, and academic integrity cases are still heard through a staged process with a right to be heard. Priya Sharma, an operations manager in Singapore studying part-time, is a full member of the university with the same library rights and the same route to appeal as any student in Oxford.

The note ends with a request: read the university as it describes itself, not as a costume drama. A 1984 foundation is a reason to expect rigour and a reason to expect access. It is not a reason to expect a bill for online tuition.

Staff across admissions, registry, teaching and student services are told to design every process as if the default student is studying after a full day's work: recorded sessions, published rubrics, named advisers, and a library desk that does not close at the end of one country's office hours. Oxfordium will not pretend a programme is light. Applicants should plan their weekly hours before accepting an offer and ask direct questions at the open webinars if a page reads as vague.

Oxfordium University is a historic British university serving a worldwide digital campus. Founded in 1984, it publishes news that is operational rather than ceremonial: what changed in a programme, who can apply, how assessment works, and how global students get help. Optional on-campus study in Oxford sits alongside fully online pathways. Questions about the claims in this article should go to the office named as author above.
